House Freedom Caucus Member to Chair All-Important Committee

The race to be chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, which focuses heavily on security at the southern border, has ended with House Freedom Caucus member Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) becoming chairman.

The race for the seat shifted in the last few months as many contenders dropped out of the race. Reps. Dan Bishop (R-NC), Michael Guest (R-MS), and House Freedom Caucus Chair Scott Perry (R-PA) all bowed out of the race, according to Politico.

The two contenders for the position were Rep. Green and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) both of whom have previously served on the committee.

Green, however, was able to beat out Crenshaw and secure the endorsement of key allies in the conservative movement including The Heritage Foundation, according to Bloomberg Government.

“We all know the border is not secure,” the congressman told reporters Monday. “You can’t objectively look at what’s happening and say it’s secure.”

“For the sake of our national security and homeland security, ending the border crisis President Biden created is our top priority,” Green tweeted on Monday after his appointment.

“I’m grateful to [Speaker Kevin McCarthy] and the House Republican Steering Committee for entrusting me with this task;” he wrote, adding, “it’s time to get to work and fulfill our Commitment to America!”

“[Dan Crenshaw] ran a spirited race,” the congressman said of his opponent. “I’m grateful for his friendship and leadership. I look forward to working with him, a fellow veteran who understands our national security challenges, to secure our homeland.”

While both men were highly qualified to fill the position of the all-important committee, Green was able to win out likely due to the pressure brought by the House Freedom Caucus during the Speaker election. 

The committee will have a busy two years as they attempt to curtail the failures of the Department of Homeland Security and hold the Biden administration, and DHS Secretary Mayorkas, accountable for their inaction.
