On Wednesday, the New York Times reported that former President Donald Trump, who was barred from every major social media platform following the events of January 6th, will be reinstated on Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram.

Meta released a press release giving the public an explanation of the company’s reasoning after it removed the 45th president over two years ago on January 7, 2021.

The company set a two-year hiatus until an oversight board could assess whether or not the former president should be allowed back on the platforms to reach his hundreds of millions of followers.

“In response to the Board, we imposed a time-bound suspension of two years from the date of the original suspension on January 7, 2021 — an unprecedented length of time for such a suspension,” the press release read. “In our response to the Oversight Board, we also said that before making any decision on whether or not to lift Mr. Trump’s suspension, we would assess whether the risk to public safety has receded.”

“The suspension was an extraordinary decision taken in extraordinary circumstances,” the press release explained. “The normal state of affairs is that the public should be able to hear from a former President of the United States, and a declared candidate for that office again, on our platforms.”

“Now that the time period of the suspension has elapsed, the question is not whether we choose to reinstate Mr. Trump’s accounts, but whether there remain such extraordinary circumstances that extending the suspension beyond the original two-year period is justified,” the company added.

“To assess whether the serious risk to public safety that existed in January 2021 has sufficiently receded, we have evaluated the current environment according to our Crisis Policy Protocol, which included looking at the conduct of the US 2022 midterm elections, and expert assessments on the current security environment,” Meta continued, adding, “Our determination is that the risk has sufficiently receded and that we should therefore adhere to the two-year timeline we set out. As such, we will be reinstating Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks. However, we are doing so with new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses.”

The move by Meta to reinstate the profiles of the leading candidate for the 2024 Republican nomination comes after both Twitter and YouTube unbanned Trump’s accounts, as reported by the New York Times.

While Trump has previously said that he will not return to Twitter and instead stay on his own social media app Truth Social, insiders are positing that the former president will return to the platform to reach the millions of voters that Twitter’s reach brings, as reported by NBC News.

With President Trump finally unbanned from nearly every major social media platform, his campaign will likely be able to come into full swing. Americans should be excited to see what Trump has to say with some of his first tweets and Facebook posts as the race for the 2024 presidential election takes shape.
